Treat it to a little rabies-free fun with today's deal: for $7, you get two full games and one pair of rental shoes (up to a $14.46 value, including tax) at Brunswick Bowling Center. This Groupon is good at Brunswick Majestic Lanes in Lynnwood. Fridays and Saturdays are the most popular times for bowling-based congregations, so show up early if you come on those nights—or be prepared to wait and engage in a little recreational noshing at the full snack bar.

Bowling is the great social equalizer—a common ground where grizzled undercover clowns, blue-collar English lords, LARPer librarians, big and tall lingerie models, hordes of hive-minded hipsters, and the other two social demographics that comprise America can unite in common cause and topple a gaggle of stuck-up, inanimate wooden pins. Brunswick has been a household name in this egalitarian pastime almost since the beginning, with a company history that dates back to the 19th century, providing classic American good times to all manner of patrons across the country. And with today's Groupon tying the room together, you'll get to play two games (up to a $10 value) in its hallowed halls wearing a pair of freshly disinfected bowling shoes (a $3.79 value).

Unlike other competitive sports, such as dogsled racing and rap battles, bowling has zero barriers to entry and a shallow learning curve. When you're ready to take the next bold step in ball-hurling evolution, engage in a round of cosmic bowling, where dancing lights, thumping tunes, plumes of mist, and glow-in-the-dark bowling accoutrements light up the full sensorium—transforming your bowling ball into a glittering planet hurtling through a vast and unknowable universe before exploding into a supernova of scattered pins. And since you can buy up to 10 of today's deal, you'll be able to spend a good chunk of your day or night at Brunswick taunting your friends and taking out frustrations on a group of hapless pinheads with today's Groupon to Brunswick Bowling.
Groupon Says
Professional Bowlsters

Which pro bowler makes his own balls out of wicker?

shop Fri, 30 Jul 2010 07:19:58 +0000 iheartsea 2583773 at http://iheartsea.com $25 for $50 Toward Regular-Priced Shrubs, Trees, Statues, and Garden Art at Rosedale Gardens
Gardeners, like memoir writers and reality television actors, are most successful when they put it all out there. We have now received a document showing details of the planned layout and can share it with you.

Above is the new design concept for Nagle that Sound Transit has unveiled. Its creates a a southern plaza and a northern section which will be a service and parking entrance. The original Nagle concept floated by Sound Transit last year treated the street as a maintenance route that would be sometimes closed to traffic and repurposed for the market. You can see how they illustrated it previously, below.

The new plan will be discussed at a public forum next Tuesday, August 3rd at the Century Ballroom. One issue raised by many about Tuesday's meeting is that it's an awful night for a community meeting with theNight Out 2010 block parties happening around the neighborhood. We asked Sound Transit about the possibility of a reschedule or follow-up meeting. Here's what spokesperson Jeff Munnoch said about that via the CHS comments:

The Capitol Hill community is very active and there are a variety of public activities and events on almost every night of the week during the busy summer months. Sound Transit attempts to avoid schedule conflicts with agencies and community groups, and unfortunately we cannot always find a time that works for everyone . This meeting was rescheduled once already to avoid a conflict with a another community group event on Wednesday night.

We want to provide everyone in the community a chance to participate and provid feedback. The materials from the meeting, will be available on our website following the meeting. We will also make the materials available here on this site, along with a link to send us in your comments or feedback.

We'll definitely report on the meeting and gather materials to share here on the site. On one hand, it might be more productive to move meetings like this to online resources more and more. On the other, it doesn't seem impossible to find a night on Capitol Hill with a lower level of schedule conflict. Meanwhile, a group from the Capitol Hill Community Council is planning a follow-up meeting on Thursday night to discuss the forum at 7 PM at Roy Street Coffee.

If that's not enough transit wonkery for you, consider spending Saturday morning at the Century Ballroom for a second session introducing the Creative Crossroads Committee to the Hill's transit oriented development process. The group, backed by King County, the Cascade Land Conservancy and a $15,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, is holding kick-off sessions to gather support for its effort to work with community groups like the Community Council-Chamber of Commerce Capitol Hill Champion joint effort. If you're a little confused about how it all fits together, so are we. So we asked.

Alison Van Gorp, urban policy director for the Cascade Land Conservancy, sent CHS the slides embedded below from the presentation the group went through during this week's first session on the Hill and will walk through again on Saturday. She pointed us specifically at slide 7:

Here is what Van Gorp wrote in her e-mail:

Our effort is pulling together a number of experts who are developing recommendations for the Champion (as well as the City and Sound Transit) on a strategy for creating community cultural space in the light rail redevelopment. We look at our effort as informing the work of the Champion going forward. The Champion will continue to advocate for the community’s vision for the light rail station, including this community cultural space component.

CHS asked Van Gorp about the possibility that Capitol Hill community groups and her organization's agendas might diverge and make it more difficult to counterbalance Sound Transit's goals. Van Grop writes that she and others will be "making sure that these two pieces are closely integrated so that we're all advocating for the same vision and no 'divisions' emerge."

Want to help make that goal a reality? Below are the slides and details of Saturday's session. Last week, we suggested you give anybody living near 10th Ave E a hug as a month of street repairs became the latest irritant to living in northernmost Capitol Hill. This week, hell, you might as well pucker up, because they'll need a kiss. Turns out, the SDOT construction project in the area has a bonus closure included in the plan this weekend. Details below. Make sure to read the fine print. More closures to come. Kiss, kiss.

It's not the only SDOT construction happening on the Hill right now but it's certainly the largest. Not sure what the crew is up to on the smaller jobs on 19th Ave E. Any other work we should be aware of. The three-year project windows on SDOT's construction map make it a little tricky to figure out what work is happening.

Oh, and, by the way, check out the previous 10th Ave E post's comments for some good tips for bicyclists seeking to avoid the mess. The contractor will have traffic control measures in place by 7 a.m. on Saturday and expects to reopen lanes by noon on Sunday, and possibly earlier on Sunday, depending on work progress.

To accommodate the work, 10th Avenue East from East Boston Street to East Roanoke Street will be closed to northbound traffic, and one southbound lane will remain open. A substantial detour will be in place: northbound traffic will be detoured from Broadway to East Roy Street, then to Belmont Avenue East, Lakeview Boulevard East, to Boylston Avenue East, and to East Roanoke Street.

Westbound traffic on East Miller Street will turn left (south) at 10th Ave E. East Miller Street will be closed to eastbound traffic between 10th Avenue East and Broadway Avenue East.

Bicyclists may use the sidewalk on the east side of 10th Ave E. Pedestrian access to all businesses and residences will be maintained. Local vehicle access will be maintained. Police officers will be on site to keep traffic moving.

The contractor expects additional weekend work during this project. As soon as we start seeing a team that looks to be making real future plans by calling up guys who'll be here when the team plans on contending for something. We saw Justin Smoak pop out in a key situation tonight with runners on second and third with one out in the sixth, the M's still in a 5-3 game at that point.

Michael Saunders got two more hits to up his average to .243.

Ichiro got the three doubles, tying a teammark done 22 times previously, once before by Ichiro himself and most recently by Rob Johnson last year.

But what more can I tell you?

That's about it. None of the pitchers you saw tonight for the Mariners is likely to still be around when this team is ready to contend. Casey Kotchman had a big night at the plate with two doubles and two runs batted in, but he won't be here come contention time either.

Kotchman also ended his night by taking a called third strike with a runner on second and one out in a 7-5 game in the seventh.

The Mariners are now 6-20 in July. It's the first time they've ever lost 20 games in the month of July and are now two defeats away the next two nights from tying for the worst mark in franchise history. That was set way back in August of the expansion 1977 season when the M's went 6-22.

Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu was disappointed that pitchers landed only 15 of 39 first pitches for strikes.

"As the series went on and we started giving up home runs, we started pitching more protectively, I think,'' Wakamatsu said. "There were 15 of 39 first-pitch strikes and whether it's our ballpark or this ballpark, the same formula works. You have to get ahead of hitters. When you fall behind, especially against a club that's as hot as this one, with their power potential, you're running into trouble.''
Read more... mariners sports baseball Fri, 30 Jul 2010 05:04:03 +0000 iheartsea 2583647 at http://iheartsea.com Startup of the week is audio clip repository Entertonement Ever wanted to track down a funny line from a TV show, movie or comedy act? Because that reporter's statement today reminded me of something I learned about message repetition while writing about Barack Obama's 2008 Democratic primary campaign in Iowa:

Even when you think it's working for the good, to watch this repetition in action, from behind the curtain, is nauseating. Political consultant David Axelrod, Obama's top campaign strategist, once told a reporter: "Here is the rule we follow with our clients—when the campaign staff and the reporters become physically ill over the repetition of the message, only then have you begun to penetrate the public consciousness."

Both Councilmember Mike O'Brien and Mayor Mike McGinn (whose message-repeater Aaron Pickus was spotted outside the O'Brien press conference today) benefit from having a very simple message, which is actually a very simple question: How are we going to pay for this thing?

No one has a good answer. But now that McGinn and O'Brien have asked it enough times—and in enough different ways—the public consciousness seems to have been penetrated. The proof is not just in the polling.
